Developed by Dr. Peter Levine, Somatic Experiencing™️ is a neuroscientific approach to the resolution of trauma. This psycho-biological approach is based on the observation that wild animals that, although regularly threatened, are rarely traumatized.

For Dr. Levine, trauma is in the nervous system, not in the event.  In the wild, animals use innate mechanisms to regulate and discharge the high levels of energetic activation associated with survival behaviors (Fight / flight). These mechanisms provide animals with inherent immunity to trauma and allow them to return to a normal state of balance / settling following very painful experiences of life and death.

  • SE  is appropriate for many types of trauma: psychological, physical or sexual assaults; motor vehicle accidents; falls; natural disasters; etc.

  • SE can also be used to address dysregulation in the autonomic nervous system (stress) contributing to chronic diseases such as migraine, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue and other autoimmune responses.

  • SE is useful in the preparation for surgeries or other medical procedures.

  • SEuses body awareness to help the client renegotiate and resolve residual symptoms rather than relive or reproduce trauma.

  • SE tracks sensations, allowing highly activated survival energies to be safely explored and gradually discharged rather than repressed and / or managed.

  • Rather than evoking catharsis, SE titrates the experience (breaking it down into small incremental steps) to avoid overwhelming the regulatory mechanisms of the body.
